Koreteh
Well its just about over now. The celebration has been had and everybody is headed back to work today or tomorrow.
Koreteh was fun, lots of good food and everybody getting all dressed up in their new clothes. We started the day off with some tasty chicken from the compound for breakfast after all the men came back from praying at the mosque. Then we spent most of the day just handing out around the compound chatting and playing cards.
Later in the day a lot of people get dressed up and go out around the neighborhood to see their friends and talk. We just kind of hung around out front and watched all the people go by. There were so many people out even yesterday it was a big party in the streets. The kids go around in groups to the different compounds and ask for salibo which is like a little gift. So you give them a coin and then all the kids get together in their group at the end of the day and split the money up to buy whatever candy or something. It seemed a lot like Halloween in that respect. That was about it for the day. There were no major events just a general festive atmosphere.
Yesterday another PC friend and I went on a long bike exploration and found a lot of cool stuff. Just about 5 min from our house you start to get out of the town and into the bush. We road down all sorts of tracks and found some cool forest areas near the river. We stopped and talked to quite a few people along the way at various villages to find our way. We eventually found a way to part of the river. Not the big river but a part of the mangrove area next to the river but I think it may still have some potential for fishing. It was pretty sweet anyway and the area near the water felt a lot like Florida.
Last night I went down to another PC friends compound just out of town. He was having a party for his friends that were visiting from the states. So we had some more good grub and hung out there for awhile. It was interesting to hear the perspective of travelers to the Gambia after being here for a little while. It makes you realize how much you have adapted from the time you got off the plane.
Check out the new pics on flicker (to the right). There are some of our host family on Koreteh and quite a few of our house. In the pics of the house you can see all the stuff that was left by the previous PC people. We didn't really buy anything in our house so we got hooked up. You may also be interested in looking at the walls which had an ummmm...... interesting pait job. Were going to need to work on that sometime soon. Anyway shoot me any questions you have. Later.
